An hotel in its death throes
In general: I have stayed at Palais Salam many times over the last four or five years and every time the quality of every aspect of the hotel has fallen. My latest visit at the begining of July 2017 was no different, except that now, in my opinion the hotel really does not deserve to remain open. I arrived and the same faces appeared. The gardien of the car park, the porter, the manage all of whom knew me and were pleasant enough. However the first problem did not take too long to appear, the air conditioning in my room was pumping out hot air when the temperature was 35C. I called reception and after a couple of visits from the handy man it was just about OK. I started to look round the public areas and to my horror I found that both swimming pools were full of green festering water. It didn't particularly bother me as I don't use pools, but the impression created was not good. A couple of workers appeared over the next few days to try to resolve the problem with the pool beneath my balcony, but I still wouldn't have used it, as the water was still very green and the local pigeon population used the shallow end for their morning ablutions. The larger pool was ignored for a couple of days, then drained and left empty. A good reason to stay at Palais Salam is the availability of beer and wine - not this time however, the cellar was dry, as I suspect a supplier had not been paid. The food at the hotel though never brilliant was usually OK but this time almost non existent. At dinner I asked for the menu and told there was not one. I was offered one starter, one main course, no choice. The following evenings almost exactly the same food appeared, no choice at all. If there is one thing to be aware of in Morocco it is the lack of hot water for showers, but, even after complaining several times I had no hot water for eight days. I am someone who needs to work electronically from time to time, so an hotel with wi fi is particularly useful, and was a reason to stay at Palais Salam. Not this time, and I couldn't even summon up the energy to complain and I knew it would be futile. The general cleanliness of the hotel was very poor as I discovered after being severely bitten night after night, and the pigeon poo around the terraces was awful. It was towards the end of my stay ( I left two days early ) that rubbish from the hotel started to appear outside by the entrance. I knew this because I spotted items from my bedroom waste paper basket in the heap - again I suggest a bill hadn't been paid. During my visit of eight days, I was for the most part the only guest in an hotel of over 200 rooms, which should give an indication of the opinion of the travelling public!
